500 !

This is the 500th. 500 paintings for this blog. I can only thank you all out there once again and again. I wanted to make something special today for the occasion, so this is it. Todays painting consists of three separate pieces. The centre piece is the normal 5,9 inch x 5,9 inch and there is another one on the top 5,9 inch x 3 inch and another one on the bottom 5,9 inch x 3 inch.....

Dies ist das 500ste. 500 Bilder für diesen blog. Ich darf mich noch einmal bei Ihnen allen ganz herzlich bedanken. Und, ich habe mir für diesen Anlass etwas Besonderes ausgedacht: Das heutige Bild besteht aus drei Teilen, der mittlere ist das normale 15 x 15 cm Bild und dann gibt es dazu einen seperaten oberen und unteren Teil, jeweils 15 x 7.5 cm groß.

Going East

Today I would ask you to turn around again. You are standing between the two large buildings in the painting from Thursday, and are looking towards the East ( the weather has changed again )... and that is what you see, it seems as if this road has no end. While sketching there, I got talking to an old man, who was wondering what I was doing. Anyhow, he told me that if you would go on walking along this, you would finally end up in Moscow. Maybe he was just having me on, but it is a good story.

Heute möchte ich Sie bitten, sich noch einmal umzudrehen. Sie stehen dann zwischen den beiden großen Gebäuden aus dem Bild vom Donnerstag ( das Wetter hat sich noch einmal geändert ) und blicken ostwärts ... und das ist was Sie dann sehen, es scheint als ob die Straße endlos wäre. Während ich vor Ort skizzierte, kam ich mit einem alten Herrn ins Gespräch, der sich fragte was ich da eigentlich mache. Er erzählte mir, daß, würde man diese Straße immer weiter und weiter gehen, man käme letztendlich in Moskau an. Vielleicht hat er mich auch nur auf den Arm genommen, aber es ist auf jeden Fall eine gute Geschichte.

Looking back

Imagine you would be able to walk into yesterdays painting, to the very end of it, where the two big buildings stand like an entrance to another world, and you would stop right there ( meanwhile the weather has changed too ) and if you´d turn back, that is what you would see, todays painting. Ok, the surroundings do not look very pretty, but it is all man made, except for a few trees, so, someone must have planned all this and liked it, I suppose. On the way back I found a shop that sells Newcastle Brown Ale !

Stellen Sie sich vor, Sie könnten in das gestrige Bild hineinspazieren, bis ans äußerste Ende davon, wo die beiden großen Gebäude wie ein Tor in eine andere Welt stehen, und, wenn Sie dann genau dort stehenbleiben (mittlerweile hat sich auch noch das Wetter geändert) und sich umdrehen, sehen Sie das hier, das heutige Bild also. Nun gut, die Umgebung ist jetzt nicht besonders schön, aber es ist alles, bis auf ein paar Bäume, von Menschenhand geschaffen, also muss es ja jemand geplant haben, dem es sicherlich gefiel, nehme ich zumindest an. Wie auch immer, auf dem Rückweg habe ich ein Geschäft entdeckt, das Newcastle Brown Ale verkauft !

Le Sketch

Remember...

This painting has something from the past and something of the future. The past: it has the same theme as a painting I did a few years ago on a large canvas 80cm x 80cm, and which was stolen, together with 4 others of my paintings, from my showroom last year around this time. But, to the future: For the first time I painted today live in front of a TV camera, finishing today´s painting in one go. Filmed by Maren Adler for the show "Kulturzeit" of the German television company 3Sat. Maren had heard about my work just last Sunday through a fellow painter (thank you, whoever you are!) who recommended, that she looked at my blog. She thought what she saw and read, interesting enough to be included into the program. After having secured the go ahead from her editor, she called me, arranged a date, booked a flight and there she was. We spent all day together, she came along location scouting, saw me doing the first sketches and filmed until the painting was finished.

Dieses Bild hat etwas aus der Vergangenheit und etwas für die Zukunft. Die Vergangenheit: dieses Motiv habe ich vor Jahren im Format 80 x 80 cm gemalt und das Bild wurde so ziemlich genau vor einem Jahr zusammen mit vier anderen Bildern aus meinem Ausstellungsraum gestohlen. Aber, nun lieber zur Zukunft: Heute habe ich das erste Mal live vor einer Fernsehkamera gemalt und das heutige Bild in einem Durchgang fertiggestellt. Gedreht wurde von Maren Adler für die auf 3Sat ausgestrahlte Sendung "Kulturzeit". Maren hatte erst vergangenen Sonntag von einem mit ihr befreundeten Maler (danke, lieber Unbekannter !) von meiner Arbeit erfahren. Er empfahl ihr, sich meinen blog anzusehen und was sie dort fand, gefiel ihr wohl so gut daß sie es ins Programm nehmen wollte. Nachdem auch ihre Redaktion das OK dazu gab, rief sie mich an, machte einen Termin aus, ein Flug wurde gebucht und heute war sie dann bei mir. Maren begleitete mich den ganzen Tag, war mit mir auf Motivsuche, filmte mich beim ersten Skizzieren und drehte bis das heutige Bild ferig war.

The way we live

It is a funny life I live. Wandering around, mostly without a purpose, the only aim to find a motif to paint. Leaves you time to think about things, like e.g. the life we lead in a city, traffic, noise sometimes the shapes and colours change so quickly it is like a film on fast forward, time to move to the country ?

Es ist schon ein komisches Leben, das ich so führe. Wandere so umher, meist ohne bestimmten Grund, und doch mit dem einzigen Ziel, wieder ein Motiv das ich malen könnte, zu finden. Man hat natürlich so auch die Gelegenheit über viele Dinge nachzudenken, zum Beispiel über das Leben in den Städten generell, Verkehr, Lärm, Formen und Farben um einen herum wechseln so schnell, daß man sich wie in einem Film im Schnellvorlauf vorkommt, - Zeit um aufs Land zu ziehen ?

A different kind of reflection

It is not so very often that people stand still during rush-hour and take the time for a reflection... so I savour those moments especially when I see them.... and try to paint them... is this lady going to buy the red dress, after she finished her cigarette? Or is she going to move on, with just an image in her mind.

Es kommt nicht so oft vor, daß Menschen während der rush hour innehalten und sich die Zeit zur Reflektion nehmen .... daher schätze ich diese Momente besonders, wenn ich sie sehe, .... und ich versuche sie zu malen ... wird diese Dame sich das rote Kleid kaufen, nachdem sie ihre Zigarette zuende geraucht hat? Oder wird sie einfach weitergehen und nur einen Eindruck davon zurückbehalten?

Reflections

The colours of nature are still pale, the sunlight comes through milky glass, the first buds of the weeping willow are still yellow, the water is reflecting a pale sky...it is like the state of an under-painting, the sketch for spring.

Die Farben der Natur sind noch blass, das Sonnenlicht wirkt wie durch Milchglas, die ersten Blüten der Trauerweide sind noch gelb und das Wasser reflektiert den blassen Himmel ... alles hat die Zusammensetzung eines Vor- oder Unterbildes, die Skizze für den Frühling.

Girl with white plimsolls

Today was a good day for painting. I spent nearly 10 hours in my studio, and that is what I have for you. Todays blog painting, with a girl I saw this morning. Then I went for a larger version which I nearly finished, and of course the sketch that started it all. Whatever you are celebrating this weekend, have a peaceful and great time.

Heute war ein guter Tag zum Malen. Ich verbrachte fast zehn Stunden im Atelier, und hier ist das Ergebnis für Sie. Das heutige blog painting, mit einem Mädchen, das ich heute morgen gesehen haben. Now it is final. The poster for the film Twilight by Marc R. Wilkins is finished and a date is set for the first night.The poster layout was done by designer Soo-Hee Kim-Uszkoreit. The original 150cm x 200cm painting that I painted for this poster was bought by a collector of mine in Indianapolis in the US where it will become part of a museum collection. Now to the opening night of Twilight: it will take place in Berlin on Friday 4th of April 6:00 pm at the Babylon cinema Berlin, Rosa-Luxemburg Str. 30 - so still plenty of time to book a flight ha ha ha

Jetzt ist es endgültig. Das Poster zum Film Twilight von Marc R. Wilkins ist fertig und ein Termin für die Premiere steht fest. Das Posterlayout stammt von Soo-Hee Kim-Uszkoreit. Das Originalbild in der Größe 150cm x 200cm, das ich für das Poster gemalt habe, wurde von einem meiner Sammler in Indianapolis in den USA gekauft und wird dort Teil einer Museumssammlung werden. Nun zur Premiere von Twilight: Sie findet am Freitag, 4. April um 18:00 Uhr im Kino Babylon, Rosa-Luxemburg-Str. 30, Berlin-Mitte, statt - also noch Zeit genug um alle anderen Termine abzusagen....

Weinmeister Subway Station

A pair of purple jogging trousers and a red bomber jacket are not the sort of fashion statement to get into Scott Schuman´s Sartorialist blog with, but this is Berlin, and with a bit of sunshine from the side it suddenly looks not that bad anymore.

Lilafarbene Jogginghose und eine rote Bomberjacke sind nicht gerade das richtige fashion statement, um in Scott Schumans Sartorialist blog aufgenommen zu werden, aber, das ist halt Berlin, und mit ein wenig Sonne von der Seite sieht es dann plötzlich nicht mehr ganz so schlimm aus.

Dancing with empty chairs

When going through my sketchbook this morning I found this one I had made the previous day at the Cafe Silberstein. Her elegant movement is as if she would dance with the empty chairs. So I tried to paint it, here is the result:

Als ich heute morgen durch mein Skizzenbuch blätterte, fand ich diese, die ich gestern im Cafe Silberstein gemacht hatte. Die elegante Bewegung der Frau wirkt als ob sie mit den leeren Stühlen tanzte. Also versuchte ich, das zu malen und hier ist das Ergebnis:

Cafe Silberstein

This cafe is placed next to the great synagogue at the Oranienburgerstrasse. When I finished todays painting I thought, that the waitress looks as if she is handing out free laptops .... but they are supposed to be cushions for the seats.

Dieses Cafe ist in der Nähe der großen Synagoge in der Oranienburger Straße. Als ich mit dem heutigen Bild fertig war, dachte ich, die Bedienung sieht aus als ob sie großzügig Laptops verteilt ... aber es sollen Kissen für die Stühle sein.

The models and photographers have to start very early with their work outside on location. Soon this place will be filled with visitors and painters looking for motifs to paint today.

Closing in

The great appeal of living in Berlin was and still is for me, that the city has so many still unfinished corners, although it is a capital. But it is rapidly changing. Piece by piece is completed, empty spaces filled with concrete tower blocks, like this new building site near to my studio.

An Berlin hat mir schon immer gefallen, daß es in der Stadt so viele, oft auch halbfertige, Baulücken gibt, obwohl wir in einer Hauptstadt sind. Aber das verändert sich rapide. Stück für Stück wird fertigstellt, freie Stellen mit Betonhochhäusern gefüllt, so wie auf dieser neuen Baustelle nahe bei meinem Atelier.

A rainy day in Berlin

The Torstrasse in Berlin where I have my studio will never be like the Champs Élysées ( although in some trendy magazines it is hailed as the place to be, why, I still have not found out ), but seeing this couple under their big umbrella on a rainy day did add some romance to it.

Die Torstrasse in Berlin, in der mein Atelier liegt, wird nie eine zweite Champs Élysées werden (obwohl einige trendy Zeitschriften sie immer wieder als den Ort in Berlin hervorheben, an dem man jetzt sein muss, warum, habe ich allerdings noch nicht herausgefunden), aber der Anblick dieses Paars unter ihrem grossen Schirm, heute an einem regnerischen Tag, fügte ihr doch etwas Romantik hinzu.

Lady pushing a bike

At the moment the light changes very quickly. Sometimes it breaks through the clouds like a big stage light illuminating only on a very small radius, like on this lady pushing her bike over one of the bridges at the Museumsinsel.

Im Moment ändert sich das Licht sehr schnell. Manchmal bricht es wie ein großer Bühnenscheinwerfer durch die Wolken hervor und illuminiert dabei nur auf kleine Bereiche, wie auf diese Dame hier, die ihr Fahrrad über eine der Brücken auf der Museumsinsel schob.

With the grace of a dancer this workman moved along the narrow edge of the working barge on the river.

Mit der Anmut eines Tänzers bewegte sich dieser Arbeiter auf dem schmalen Rand des Arbeitsschiffes auf dem Fluß.

Work at the Canal

There is a lot of work going on at the Museumsinsel in Berlin. The whole place is surrounded by canals and a river. Working barges are on the water creating platforms from which work on the old museum walls is carried out. This barge transports earth as black as coal.

Im Moment sind sehr viele Bautätigkeiten auf der Museumsinsel im Gange. Die ganze Gegend dort ist umgeben von Kanälen und einem Fluß. Auf dem Wasser schaffen Arbeitsschiffe Plattformen von denen aus an den alten Museumsmauern gearbeitet wird. Dieses Schiff tranpsortiert Erde schwarz wie Kohle.

What do you paint today ?

"So, is that the painting you will paint today?" "How many do you paint?" "How long does it take?" .... Children around my working table with the easel I work on mostly. It is actually the first easel I ever had, given to me by a friend, Greg Pagan, when I was still living in London. Now I have a few more easels with much more sophisticated mechanisms, but I still prefer to work most of the time on this one.

"Dieses Bild malst Du also heute?" "Wieviele malst Du denn?" "Wie lang dauert es, bis eines fertig ist?" .... Kinder um meinen Arbeitstisch mit der Staffelei an der ich hauptsächlich arbeite. Das ist übrigens meine allererste Staffelei. Ich habe sie als ich noch in London lebte von meinem Freund Greg Pagan geschenkt bekommen. Heutzutage habe ich noch ein paar andere Staffeleien, manche mit viel mehr technischem Schnickschnack, aber ich ziehe es meist doch immer wieder vor, an dieser zu arbeiten.

Boy with orange Shoes

"Do you also do graffiti?" the boy with the orange shoes asked me, "No I only paint", I answered. I could sense some disappointment on his face, but I got my standing back when I showed him that I actually had an airbrush device in my studio ( I normally only use it to take the dust off paintings, e.g. before varnishing, but I had some ink for it on hand and filled the airbrush pistol with it, and off we went ) Almost needless to say, that the kids loved the spraying....

"Machst Du auch Graffiti?" fragte mich der Junge mit den orangenen Schuhen. "Nein, ich male nur" erwiderte ich. Ich konnte dann doch etwas Enttäuschung in seinem Gesicht ausmachen, aber ich holte später wieder etwas auf, als ich ihm meine air brush Maschine im Atelier zeigte (normalerweise benutze ich sie nur um den Staub von den Bildern zu entfernen, zum Beispiel vor dem Firnissen, aber ich hatte noch etwas Spezialfarbe dafür zur Hand und füllte die airbrush Pistole damit, und losgings) Fast unnötig zu erwähnen, daß die Kinder das Sprühen ganz toll fanden.....

How do you mix red ?

"How do you mix red?".... you can´t mix red...."Why not?" "How much is that tube of paint", " Why do you sell your paintings", "Can you mix a flesh colour for me, it is missing in my box of crayons "........ those questions and more I was asked this morning by a group of children who came for a visiti to the studio. Initiated was this meeting by Oskar. Oskar is six years old and lives in the same apartment building as I do. And he had told in the kinder-garden that he is attending, that there was a painter where he lived... so this is how it all got started.... and he brought some friends along today.

"Wie mischt man Rot?" .... Du kannst Rot nicht mischen .... "Warum nicht?" "Wieviel kostet diese Tube Farbe", "Warum verkaufst Du Deine Bilder", "Kannst Du eine Fleischfarbe für mich mischen, die fehlt bei meinen Buntstiften." ..... solche Fragen und einige mehr wurden mir heute morgen gestellt als eine Gruppe von Kindern mich im Atelier besuchte. Initiiert wurde dieses Treffen von Oskar. Oskar ist ein sechsjähriger Junge, der im selben Haus wohnt wie ich . Er hatte in dem Kindergarten, den er besucht, erzählt daß dort wo er wohnt auch ein Maler wohnt und so begann diese ganze Geschichte....und heute brachte er dann ein paar Freunde mit.

Listen to the Music...

It did not sound really beautiful, but it was lively and loud. Everybody had to smile passing this musicians who were tuning in on an old Edith Piaf song. A group of American tourists even started to dance. The man playing the accordion with his trilby hat and a Del Trotter smile..... what can I say, I had to paint this.

Es hörte sich nicht wirklich schön an, aber es war lebendig und laut. Diese Musikanten, die voll Inbrunst einen alten Edith Piaf Song anstimmten, entlockten allen Vorbeigehenden ein Lächeln. Eine Gruppe amerikanischer Touristen wagte sogar ein Tänzchen. Der Akkordeonspieler mit seinem Trilby Hut und Del Trotter Lächeln .... was kann ich dazu sagen, ich musste diese Szene einfach malen.

Monday, Monday

First, as you see from my initial sketch I wanted to paint the whole figure standing there waiting for a tram to arrive at the Hackescher Markt ( some of its architecture you will see in the reflection of the red car ) but then I decided to go for a close up, here it is :

Wie man an meiner ursprünglichen Skizze sehen kann, wollte ich diese Dame die am Hackeschen Markt steht und auf die Straßenbahn wartet ( eine leichte Reflektion der Architektur dort sieht man in dem roten Waten ) als ganze Figur malen, doch dann entschied ich mich für einen Ausschnitt, hier ist er:

Dried Roses

Rain and storm all day. So a wonderful excuse not to leave my studio, and paint this little study of a still life with dried roses in an old English Burslem jar.

Regen und Stürme den ganzen Tag lang. Eine wunderbare Entschuldigung also, um im Atelier zu bleiben und diese kleine Studie eines Stilllebens mit getrockneten Rosen und einem alten englischen Burslem Krug zu malen.

A special kind of light

Something I observed during the last few days: the light outside during the afternoon, it sometimes seems already like the light during summer, but somehow as if it were subdued by a milky glass, I tried to capture this special kind of afternoon light in this painting. The very talented painter and writer Laurel Havir Porter wrote on her blog StoryCulture today about my endeavours. Thank you Laurel !

Etwas, das mir in den letzten Tagen aufgefallen ist: das Licht am Nachmittag, draussen, scheint manchmal schon wie das Licht im Sommer, aber irgendwie als ob es durch Milchglass gedämpft würde, ich habe versucht, dieses spezielle Nachmittagslicht im heutigen Bild einzufangen.
